St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton, Massachusetts was fined more than $218,000 for not using secure documentation methods to track patient records. The facility had been using an open share, online document sharing platform instead of secured EHR software, which left patient data vulnerable to data hacks and information breaches. The OCR has collected more than $28 million in fines since enforcement began in 2003. Health care IT News reports that the Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center was fined when just one doctor accidentally deactivated a server that allowed records to be accessed publicly online. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was established to set national standards to protect individual’s medical records and other personal health information.
