Helping Employees Yell “Red Light” on the COVID Virus

A Child-like View

Many of you might recall playing, “Red Light, Green Light” as a child. A group of kids would assemble in a line during recess. One child would be assigned to be the ‘traffic light.’

Meanwhile, that child would stand with their back to a line of kids and remain about 20 feet away. When the traffic patroller shouted, “Green Light!” everybody would run towards them.

However, if the traffic patroller shouted, “Red Light!” everyone would freeze without motion. The patroller would check for movement.

Every kid caught moving would need to return to the starting line and lose their momentum.

The objective of the game was to beat your opponents by reaching the patroller, tapping them on the shoulder, and becoming the next ‘traffic light.’

Similarly, COVID-19 essentially creates a “Red Light, Green Light” game with our lives.

This is evident when looking at the overall timeline to date. Businesses and institutions open up, receive a positive test or diagnosis, and close back down.

As an employee, it is hard to define COVID-19, recognize symptoms, and employ safety measures.

Employees in every industry are susceptible to contracting the virus because of a lack of social distancing. For instance, we often ask:

  • What are some of the actions I can take to ensure safety?
  • When is it right to return to work?
  • Will my employer penalize me if I contract the illness?

Important questions such as these are just some of the questions that employees are asking around the globe.

Here are a few actions you can take to yell “Red Light!” and put a stop to the COVID-19 pandemic:

Two COVID Stoplight Actions

1. Testing & Scheduling

Most importantly, if you, a family member, friend, or co-worker suspect infection, a test can be scheduled by navigating to https://publichealth.harriscountytx.gov/Resources/2019-Novel-Coronavirus/COVID-19-Testing-Information.

2. Educating to Stop COVID-19

“Businesses need to confirm that their employees are trained on proven ways to protect themselves, and others, against COVID-19, as well as confirm – that they have documented proof of a COVID course completion.”
